Your health is an investment, not an expense.

Good Foods for Gut Health

In my previous posts, I have touched on gut health because fiber plays a big role. A healthy gut relies on a healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive system – primarily the large intestine. The bacteria that live in your gut are the good bacteria. They play a role in keeping you healthy overall and help prevent developments of chronic illness, cardiac issues, and so on. The best way to care for your gut is through the foods you eat. Let’s take a closer look of the best foods for optimal gut health.

What Foods are Good for Gut Health?

The biggest takeaway is that plant-based foods are the best for gut health. But let’s talk about some more specific examples:

Fermented Foods – They are great for gut health because they increase the number of good bacteria in your gut. It is important to note that prebiotics are important because they are the “food” that the gut bacteria feed off of. More examples of fermented foods include miso, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, sourdough bread, sauerkraut, tempeh, natto

Legumes – they are high in fiber, which is perfect for the health of your gut bacteria!

Whole grains – another good source of fiber, and  nondigestible carbohydrates like beta-glucan. They are not absorbed in the small intestine; they get to the large intestine and promote growth of the good gut bacteria.

Polyphenol-rich Foods – this is a plant compound that has a number of health benefits. It is not always digestible, so they make their way to the large intestine where they are digested by the good gut bacteria and helps them grow. Examples of polyphenol foods include cocoa and dark chocolate, red wine, grape skins, green tea, almonds, onions, blueberries, and broccoli

The Bottom Line

Having a healthy gut is so very important for a number of health reasons. The best and easiest way to feed your good gut bacteria and keep them happy is to consume a more plant-based diet with a range of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
