Food Myths Debunked

If you follow me on Instagram you know I post Myth-Busting Thursdays on my story (if you’re not already following me, come check out all of the fun here!). One of my favorite aspects about my job is shedding light on these nutrition myths, debunking falsehoods and showing light to the truth. In the world of social media, diet culture permeates and thus, so do the lies. In this blog post, I am sharing with you myths that I think need clarification on ASAP. So let’s get to it!

 

Myth: You Need Protein Powder to Meet Protein Needs

Truth: Protein powder, like any supplement, can have its place in someone’s diet if they are unable to consume enough through food sources. However, that doesn’t mean that you necessarily need it because you see someone else on social media saying how great it is. Myth: Tracking Macros is Necessary for Weight Loss

Truth: Adding protein, fats, and carbs to each meal is important but that does not mean it's necessary to track how much you eat of each at every single meal. For some people, constantly counting macros can trigger eating disorder behaviors, especially if they have a history of disordered eating. Focus instead on adding one source of each to your meal knowing you are creating a healthful and filling plate!

 

Myth: Detoxes Work

Truth: If I had a penny for every time I have debunked detoxes! They are 100% unnecessary, they are just expensive juices that will pass right through you. It is the job of the kidneys and liver to filter out any toxins as a result of metabolism and excrete them safely. The best thing you can do is to focus on eating a wide variety of foods and engage in healthful habits such as exercise, adequate sleep, and keeping hydrated.

 

Myth: All Organic Foods Are Healthy

Truth: To be labeled organic, the food must be free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Choosing organic produce can reduce your chemical exposure, but potato chips labeled “organic” are still potato chips. It's ok to eat them, of course! However, it's important to know they are not much different, and that goes for any food item nutritionally-similar to potato chips that are organic.

 

Myth: Sea Salt is Superior to Kosher Salt

Truth: The greater healthcare industry agrees that sodium content should be limited, especially for those with history of cardiac illness. However, there is no singular variety of salt that is better than another. It is okay to have a preference and use which one you enjoy the most, there is just no difference in its effects on your health. For example, numerous professional chefs prefer to use kosher salt because the larger crystals make it easier to control how much they add to their dishes. 

 

Myth: High-Fat Foods Are Unhealthy

Truth: Even though this myth is slowly going away, many people still believe and fear high fat foods thinking it will benefit their health and help lose weight. The truth is, dietary fat is so important! They play a crucial role in multiple bodily functions. Low fat diets are also linked to increased risks for health issues.

 

Myth: Weight Loss is Quick

Truth: Something that diet culture has done well is to make millions of people think that weight loss happens within days or weeks. This is flat-out false. It requires self-love, patience, and sustainable lifestyle habits. With my guidance, I can show you the way to sustainable weight loss eating the foods you love!
